As we roll into 2024, what better time to explore some upcoming food trends? I've reviewed the latest food trend data reports and drawn evidence from my professional life as a dietitian to share with you my predicted top food trends for 2024. Let’s dive in!
Plant Based Seafood:
In all the reports I've reviewed, sustainability remains a prevailing trend, emphasizing that opting for plant-based protein options can effectively reduce your carbon footprint. While meat alternatives have been popular for some time, I anticipate a growing presence of this trend in the seafood sector. Some brands I recommend checking out are Good Catch and Fysh Foods.
2. Gut Friendly Foods:
While pre and probiotic supplements are popular, you know I'm all about getting your nutrients through food so I will continue to recommend gut friendly foods to my clients in 2024. One way to improve gut health is by adding in more Sunsweet prunes to your diet as they are a natural source of prebiotic fibers. Pears are also a great addition to alleviate constipation. Lastly, for an added boost of fiber be sure to throw blueberries into your smoothies, yogurt bowls and salads.
3. Sustainable Seafood:
The trend of sustainable seafood has gained momentum as consumers increasingly prioritize environmentally friendly and ethically sourced options. With a focus on responsible fishing practices and aquaculture, this movement aims to support marine ecosystems while promoting the long-term health of our oceans. I recommend checking out Blue Circle Foods for some delicious and eco-friendly seafood options.
4. Cow's milk makes a comeback:
Compared to non-dairy alternatives, cow's milk is higher in protein, vitamin D and calcium. For those struggling with vitamin D deficiency or who are at risk of delincing bone health, real dairy may be a better choice if you can tolerate it. I love starting my day with Clover Sonoma Half and Half in my coffee.
5. Foods for Longevity:
According to the Mintel Food Trend Review, members of Generation X, currently in their mid-40s to late 50s (born between around 1965 and 1979), are expressing increased interest in nutrition that supports longevity and healthy aging. One nutrient to focus on for longevity is omega-3s, which have anti-inflammatory and brain health-supporting properties. You can get adequate omega-3s by eating 8 oz of fatty fish per week. I love the tinned fish from Scout (which is MSC certified for its sustainability practices) on salads or whole grain toast.
In addition to omega-3s, another longevity supporting food is strawberries. In a prospective study of women 70 or older, greater intakes of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids and higher consumption of strawberries, specifically, (at least 2 servings per week) were associated with slower rates of cognitive decline.
6. Caesar Everything:
According to Datassential's 2024 Food Trends report everyone's love for Caesar flavoring isn’t going away. In addition to the typical salad we may see caesar flavor popping up on things like roasted veggies, fries, sandwiches and more!
7. Alternative flours:
With the rise of gluten-free and grain-free diets, there's been an increased interest in alternative flours made from sources such as almond, coconut, chickpea, and cassava. These may continue to be popular in gluten-free and paleo-friendly recipes.
8. Buckwheat as the newest super grain:
Buckwheat is a nutritious gluten-free grain that provides 4.5 grams of fiber and 5.7 grams of protein per cup. It is also rich in minerals such as manganese, copper, and magnesium. You can use buckwheat in place of oats or as the base of a veggie grain bowl. As buckwheat is a staple in Eastern Europe, I grew up eating it, so I'm glad to see it making its way to the US!
9. Botanical beverages:
Think floral flavors like lavender, hibiscus, rose, & jasmine highlighted in your fav beverages. These sips provide a sweet taste with fewer calories and sugar than soda. Some of my favorite brands are Rishi Tea and Drink Petal.
10. Anti-Stress Sips:
These provide a calming sense (through CBD, adaptogens and nootropics) without the lasting negative effects of alcohol. Some of my favorite anti-stress sips are Kin euphorics, Recess and Hop Wtr.
